/ ˌlipəˈdōmiks / · noun
noun · precision scienceThe large-scale study of the complete set of lipids in a cell, tissue, or organism - their structures, functions, and interactions - and the clinical application of that knowledge to human health.
Origin
From Greek lipos (fat) + -omics (study of a complete set). The term emerged in the early 2000s, as advances in mass spectrometry made it possible to measure thousands of lipid species at once.
The Lipidomics Department at the American Board of Precision Medicine translates the science of the human lipidome into actionable clinical knowledge - equipping physicians to interpret lipid profiles, identify cardiometabolic and inflammatory risk, and personalize care at the molecular level.
From mass spectrometry-based lipid profiling and advanced lipoprotein analysis to membrane biology and inflammatory signaling, this department bridges the gap between laboratory discovery and bedside practice - training clinicians to see far beyond the standard cholesterol panel.
Grounded in rigorous board standards and driven by an interdisciplinary framework, lipidomics at ABOPM is not a niche specialty - it is a window into metabolic health and a core pillar of precision care.

Clinical Possibilities
The Lipidomics Department at ABOPM exists at the intersection of metabolic science and patient care — training physicians to profile the lipidome, interpret its signals, and transform outcomes in cardiometabolic, inflammatory, and neurological health.
Advancing research in mass spectrometry-based lipid profiling, lipid mediators, and membrane composition — expanding our understanding of how lipid biology drives human disease.
Bridging the gap between laboratory lipidomics and bedside medicine — developing board-certified frameworks for advanced lipid testing, cardiometabolic risk assessment, and targeted nutritional and therapeutic intervention.
Building the next generation of lipidomics-fluent clinicians through rigorous board standards, interdisciplinary training, and collaboration across medicine, nutrition, and molecular science.
"Cholesterol is only the first chapter. The lipidome tells the whole story — and the Lipidomics Department at ABOPM trains physicians to read it, interpret it, and act on it with precision and purpose."
— American Board of Precision Medicine · Lipidomics DepartmentThousands of distinct lipids shape every cell membrane, signaling pathway, and energy store in the body. Learning to read the lipidome is not optional for the future of medicine — it is foundational.
Lipidomics equips clinicians to look beyond the standard cholesterol panel and into the molecular drivers of cardiometabolic disease, inflammation, and neurodegeneration — enabling earlier detection, more precise therapeutics, and care that is truly individualized at the metabolic level.
By mastering lipidomics, clinicians gain the power to:
The science is here. The clinical tools are ready. The question is, are you?
Lipid-guided care looks past LDL cholesterol alone to uncover residual cardiovascular risk, target inflammation, and enable true preventive medicine.
Advanced markers like apoB and Lp(a) are moving into mainstream guidelines. Clinicians who can interpret the full lipid picture will lead; those who can't will be left behind.
Board certification in lipidomics establishes you as a recognized leader, differentiating your expertise in an era where precision medicine is the standard of care.
Lipidomics connects every specialty: cardiology, endocrinology, neurology, oncology, nutrition - giving you tools that transcend clinical silos.
Active research areas driving lipidomic medicine forward:
The lipidomic revolution is not a future event - it is happening now. High-resolution mass spectrometry, advanced lipoprotein testing, and lipid-based risk markers are actively reshaping how disease is detected, treated, and prevented at the molecular level.
The ABOPM Lipidomics Department positions clinicians at the center of this transformation - equipping them with the scientific literacy, clinical frameworks, and board-certified credentials to lead lipidomic medicine in any specialty.
— Director of Lipidomics —
Dr. Patel is a cardiology fellow at the University of Chicago, completing a dedicated lipid fellowship under Dr. Michael Davidson. His clinical focus is preventive cardiology and the management of complex and inherited lipid disorders. He earned his MD and MBA from Northwestern University.
Outside clinical practice, he previously served as Chief Business Officer at Tell Health and consults for digital health and genomics companies. As Director of Lipidomics at ABOPM, he focuses on translating lipid and lipoprotein biomarkers into evidence-based clinical decisions.
